Favourite Books:
It is perhaps impossible to fairly and objectively choose one's "favourite" books. But subjective judgements are not bad.
As Emerson has said:
If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads. Emerson
This is a shortlist of books I've read and that I particularly treasure.
Wapshot Chronicle - Cheever. A truly remarkable portrait of New England life.
Howards End - E M Forster. Sensitive consideration of friendship, family and coming of age.
A Dance to the Music of Time - Anthony Powell. A chronicle of an age and a culture.
Jacob's Room - V. Woolf. Quietly studied novel of youth and love.
Asa as I Knew Him - Susanna Kaysen. An affair, Cambridge, literary world. Not particularly well reviewed but it very much touched me - Passion and indifference.
Strangers and Brothers - C.P. Snow. - How, as a Cambridge Man could I not appreciate these novels of academic intrigue and politics.
THERE ARE OTHERS - BUT THESE STAND OUT FOR ME AS I RUMINATE ON READING. ASK YOURSELF - WHAT ARE MY FAVOURITE BOOKS - A HARD QUESTION
